Volunteer Opportunties at the WIN Food Pantry

Picture
There are many opportunities to help out at the WIN Food Pantry:

  • Food Pantry Staff:  We have regular pantry hours Monday through Thursday and have volunteers assigned to shifts throughout the week. Our longest and busiest day is on Monday when we pack for families scheduled to receive groceries, so the most volunteers are needed then with fewer hours needed on other days. We also keep a list of volunteers willing to fill in as substitutes and call upon them as needed.

  • Picking up from Trader Joes: On Sunday evenings (between 9:30 pm and 10:00 pm) a volunteer picks up donated bread and brings it to the food pantry on Monday morning. We try to have enough people assist with this so nobody does it more than once or twice each month.

  • Helping with deliveries:  Some of the families eligible to receive food from the pantry do not have cars or cannot drive, so we deliver their groceries to them on Mondays.

  • Help during non-regular pantry hours on evenings and weekends:  We often receive food donations from various organization (Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, service organizations)  who cannot deliver their donations during our regular pantry hours.  Sometimes it is a weekday evening, or on Saturday or Sunday. Volunteers are needed to receive the donations, check expiration dates and shelve the items.

  • Picking up donations:  We are occasionally called upon to pick up donations.  At times this can require several cars and individuals who can carry groceries from the donation site to the pantry.  Volunteers review food expiration dates and put the donations on the shelves.

  • Attending events: We have a table at the Wayne Summer Concert Series, and attend other local fundraising events all of which require our active participation.

  • Behind the scenes help: If you are computer savvy, a good writer, or have accounting skills, perhaps you can offer your services in other ways:
    - Help with Facebook posts, our website or retrieve/respond to emails
    - Send out donation acknowledgement letters
    - Write press releases for the local newspapers
